Lithospheric evolution of the Antarctic shield is one of the keystones for understanding continental growth during the Earth's evolution. Architecture of the East Antarctic craton is characterized by comparison with deep structures of the other Precambrian terrains. In this paper, we review the subsurface structure of the Lower Paleozoic metamorphic complex around the Lützow-Holm area (LHC), East Antarctica, where high-grade metamorphism occurred during the Pan-African orogenic event. LHC is considered to be one of the collision zones in the last stage of the formation of Gondwana. A geoscience program named ‘Structure and Evolution of the East Antarctic Lithosphere (SEAL)’ was carried out since 1996-1997 austral summer season as part of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE). Several geological and geophysical surveys were conducted including a deep seismic refraction/wide-angle reflection survey in the LHC. The main target of the SEAL seismic transect was to obtain lithospheric structure over several geological terrains from the western adjacent Achaean Napier Complex to the eastern Lower Paleozoic Yamato-Belgica Complex. The SEAL program is part of a larger deep seismic profile, LEGENDS (Lithospheric Evolution of Gondwana East iNterdisciplinary Deep Surveys) that will extend across the Pan-African belt in neighboring fragments of Gondwana. 相似文献

In the theory of saltation, under development since the 1940s, it is often assumed that saltation is homogeneous, i.e., saltating particles are uniform in size and follow identical trajectories. This assumption is a limitation to the development of saltation theory. In this paper, as in some other studies made since the 1980s, we are concerned with the saltation of multi-sized particles in turbulent flows, a process that we refer to as heterogeneous saltation. The theory deals with several questions, including the variation of particle size distribution with height, the entrainment rates of particles in different size ranges, and the associated profiles of saltation flux, particle momentum flux and particle concentration. It is hypothesised that saltation is dynamically similar and ‘universal’ similarity functions can be established. The similarity function for saltation flux is presented. Field observations are carried out at the southern fringe of the Takla Makan Desert in April 2002. Measurements of streamwise saltation flux of 32 particle size groups are made using a sand particle counter, together with measurements of wind speed and other atmospheric variables. These data are used to validate the saltation theory, by examining whether the observed saltation flux and particle size distribution can be reproduced. The Gorny Altai region in southern Siberia is one of the key areas in reconstructing the tectonic evolution of the western segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). This region features various orogenic elements of Late Neoproterozoic–Early Paleozoic age, such as an accretionary complex (AC), high-P/T metamorphic (HP) rocks, and ophiolite (OP), all formed by ancient subduction–accretion processes. This study investigated the detailed geology of the Upper Neoproterozoic to Lower Paleozoic rocks in a traverse between Gorno-Altaisk city and Lake Teletskoy in the northern part of the region, and in the Kurai to Chagan-Uzun area in the southern part. The tectonic units of the studied areas consist of (1) the Ediacaran (=Vendian)–Early Cambrian AC, (2) ca. 630 Ma HP complex, (3) the Ediacaran–Early Cambrian OP complex, (4) the Cryogenian–Cambrian island arc complex, and (5) the Middle Paleozoic fore-arc sedimentary rocks. The AC consists mostly of paleo-atoll limestone and underlying oceanic island basalt with minor amount of chert and serpentinite. The basaltic lavas show petrochemistry similar to modern oceanic plateau basalt. The 630 Ma HP complex records a maximum peak metamorphism at 660 °C and 2.0 GPa that corresponds to 60 km-deep burial in a subduction zone, and exhumation at ca. 570 Ma. The Cryogenian island arc complex includes boninitic rocks that suggest an incipient stage of arc development. The Upper Neoproterozoic–Lower Paleozoic complexes in the Gorno-Altaisk city to Lake Teletskoy and the Kurai to Chagan-Uzun areas are totally involved in a subhorizontal piled-nappe structure, and overprinted by Late Paleozoic strike-slip faulting. The HP complex occurs as a nappe tectonically sandwiched between the non- to weakly metamorphosed AC and the OP complex. These lithologic assemblages and geologic structure newly documented in the Gorny Altai region are essentially similar to those of the circum-Pacific (Miyashiro-type) orogenic belts, such as the Japan Islands in East Asia and the Cordillera in western North America. The Cryogenian boninite-bearing arc volcanism indicates that the initial stage of arc development occurred in a transient setting from a transform zone to an incipient subduction zone. The less abundant of terrigenous clastics from mature continental crust and thick deep-sea chert in the Ediacaran–Early Cambrian AC may suggest that the southern Gorny Altai region evolved in an intra-oceanic arc-trench setting like the modern Mariana arc, rather than along the continental arc of a major continental margin. Based on geological, petrochemical, and geochronological data, we synthesize the Late Neoproterozoic to Early Paleozoic tectonic history of the Gorny Altai region in the western CAOB. 相似文献

Organochlorine compounds (OCs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), chlordane related compounds, hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), tris(4-chlorophenyl) methane (TCPMe) and tris(4-chlorophenyl) methanol were determined in the blubber of Dall's porpoises (Phocoenoides dalli) collected from Japanese coastal waters in 1998/1999. Among OCs analyzed, PCBs were the predominant contaminants with concentrations ranging from 1.5 to 39 microg/g on a wet weight basis. OCs concentrations were relatively low and less variable in mature females possibly due to the lactational excretion from their bodies, while in males the concentrations were increased with body length. Concentrations and compositions of DDTs and HCHs showed significant differences between the truei-type population off the Pacific coast of northern Japan and dalli-type from the Sea of Japan/Okhotsk, suggesting its usefulness to discriminate different populations. OCs levels detected in truei-type porpoises collected in 1998/1999 were lower than those collected in 1984, except TCPMe. On the other hand, except DDTs, the residue levels of other organochlorines in dalli-type porpoises showed no significant decrease since 1984. 相似文献

The stratigraphic architecture of sedimentary basin provides important constraints on the rheological structure of the upper mantle and the crust, eustatic events and tectonic movements. In this study, we examined the convective coupling between the uppermost mantle and ductile lower crust as a formation mechanism of sedimentary basins. In this mechanism, the lower crust is squeezed by the upper mantle flow associated with mantle diapiric upwelling, resulting in the surface subsidence and formation of sedimentary basin. We investigated the stratigraphic architecture by taking into account the horizontal migration of the upwelling in time and spatial domains. The sedimentary basin is characterized by both the thickness and formation period for its gross feature and the sequence stratigraphy. The decay of the upwelling causes the surface uplift, and some parts of sediments deposited during the surface subsidence are consequently eroded. The subsidence area moves as the activity of upwelling horizontally migrates, resulting in the formation of unconformity for the uplifted and eroded area over the previous upwelling. We also incorporated the effects of third order eustasy, with amplitude of 100 m and period of 1 Myr, into convective coupling model. An application of our model to Karatsu-Sasebo coalfield in the Tertiary of the northwest Kyushu, Japan, indicates that the stratigraphic architecture of sedimentary basin including two effects, i.e. convective coupling and eustasy, may provide important information about the viscosity structure of the lower crust and uppermost mantle and spatio-temporal growth and decay histories of the mantle diapiric upwelling. 相似文献

Monsoon Project (CAMP) on the Tibetan Plateau (CAMP-Tibet), structure of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) was
preliminarily studied during the dry and rainy seasons. The main results show: (a) Diurnal variation of the ABL is obvious over
the northern Tibetan Plateau area. The height of the ABL is different with the season change, which ranges from 2,211 m to
4,430 m during the pre-monsoon season and from 1,006 m to 2,212 m during the monsoon season. The ABL height is higher
during the dry period than during the rainy period. (b) The humidity is lower during the dry period than during the rainy period,
and there are reverse humidity during both periods. (c) Horizontal wind direction is mostly west during the dry period, east
under the height of 2,500 m and west above the height of 2,500 m during the rainy period. The wind speed is low during both
the rainy and dry periods in the lower ABL layer. The wind speed is stronger within the upper ABL during the dry period than

Single whole crystals of calcic augite from M. Etna, Sicily, which display both sector and oscillatory zoning, have been serially sectioned and the form of the sectors mapped out. The principal intersectorial chemical variation is shown to be that of Ti and Al by as much as 39% (cation %) change in each, and the least variation, that of Ca (showing a 0.77 to 3.20% change). For each of three isochronous surfaces the ratio of Ti∶Al is shown to be individually constant no matter what the sector and this is thought to indicate near equilibrium conditions at the crystal/liquid interface. In addition to sector zoning these crystals display two types of concentric banding, having dimensions of about 0.25 mm, 20 μm. The 20 μm banding is shown to be both optically and chemically oscillated. Relative diffusion rates of cationic species in the melt, and growth rates of crystal faces are thought to play an important role in the formation of the oscillations, and the sector zoning. 相似文献

The quantitative C dynamics of desertifiedlands in Northern China were predicted for the years2000 and 2030, based on the areas and conversion rates(positive and negative) of desertified lands in thepast forty years and organic carbon contents of soils.The top 1.0 m soil layer of natural desertified landsin China contained some 7,841 Tg of organic carbon asof 1992. In China, over the last 40 years, a total of2,812 Tg of organic carbon was released from desertlands and, in the reverse process about 644 Tg oforganic-C were fixed into lands undergoingdesertification. Thus, China's desert lands have showna net release of 2,168 Tg of organic-C over the past40 years, equivalent to 7,949 Tg of CO2. By theyear 2000, the area of desertified lands in China hadincreased 40,300 km2 and released 368 Tg oforganic-C into the atmosphere. By 2030 this area willincrease to 249,700 km2 and release about 1,996 Tg of organic-Cinto the atmosphere. Net releases of151 Tg and 1,243 Tg of organic-C can be expectedby the year 2000 and 2030, respectively. This wouldbe equivalent to a net release of 553 Tg of CO2by 2000 and 4,558 Tg by 2030. Thus, the organiccarbon released through land desertification in Chinacould be an important factor affecting changes inconcentrations of greenhouse gases worldwide. 相似文献

High(C2/c)-low(P21/c) phase transition in clinoenstatite and pigeonite was successfully observed in situ at high temperatures for the first time under a transmission electron microscope. The phase transition was revealed to possess the characteristics of a first-order transition, due to the coexistence of both phases separated by the sharp interfaces and the nucleation-growth process. The diffusionless and time-independent reaction suggests that the transition occurs athermal-martensitically. Furthermore, the small or even negative thermal hysteresis and the interface motion suggest that the transition is not a typical type but a thermoelastic type of the martensitic transformation. This type of the transformation, studied extensively in metallurgy in relation to shape memory effect, is first recognized in rock-forming minerals. 相似文献
